Here at BeeHive Homes of Gainesville, Georgia, we are always looking for great ideas to keep our residents active, spending time with other residents, and making new friends.
We keep an activity calendar, which is posted in several areas of the home so that visiting family members have the opportunity to visit their loved one during those dates and times. Listed below are our Top 5 ways we keep our residents active and healthy.
1. We like to keep our residents connected with family members
Seniors living in a personal care home can get lonely because some of our residents have little contact with their family. Keeping our residents connected with their family can reassure them that they’re not forgotten. For family members who live far from our personal care home in Gainesville, we can arrange video chats or phone calls so that family can have a chance to visit with their loved one virtually.
Sharing current photos and videos is another way we keep our residents in the loop on family activities and/or trips. Our personal care home residents especially enjoy watching videos of children. We can even share Facebook and other social media feeds to show what family members have been up to lately. Of course, this will have to be planned ahead of time to assure you have the photos and/or videos uploaded. We also invite family members to come and participate during our activities and special event times.
2. We like to enjoy music together
Music tends to have a universal ability to boost our residents' moods, reduce agitation, increase happiness and encourage engagement. If we’re not sure what music our personal care home residents enjoy, we ask relatives or we bring a selection of songs that came out when they were young and ask which they like most. There is no substitute for a live performer, so we are always on the lookout for individuals who are willing to come in and perform for our residents. Our staff members tend to enjoy this as well.
3. We like to get some fresh air
Each of our residents has an opportunity to join our walking club. Some residents do not want to go outside, so we have an area where this can be done inside the home as well. We find that once they get used to the idea, our residents look forward to walking instead of staying in their room or watching television.
Some of our residents enjoy sitting on the front porch where we have rocking chairs; they enjoy watching the neighborhood activity. We also have a courtyard, fountain and a garden where our residents can enjoy the beautiful flowers. It is therapeutic and good for their health and our staff members benefit as well.
4. Spiritual Wellness
Our residents come from all walks of life and everyone's spiritual needs are important to us. We have relationships with volunteer pastors of all denominations and they rotate Wednesdays and Sundays to provide a heart-harming message and great music for our residents each week.
Some of the benefits of spiritual wellness include having compassion, the capacity for love and forgiveness, joy, and fulfillment. Your religious faith, values, beliefs, principles, and morals define your spirituality and can help you enjoy your spiritual health.
Visitors are welcome to come and enjoy these services and we would love to have you. It is a great way to see first-hand BeeHive Homes of Gainesville and our beautiful home.
5. Games are fun for everyone at any age
Our staff enjoys game-day just as much as our residents, it is a great way for everyone to take a few moments of the day and have a few snacks, great conversation, and of course, play some games.
Bingo has to be the most popular game with our seniors; they love the gifts when they win! We realize Bingo may not be for everyone, so we make sure that during our intake assessment that we specifically ask each resident what they like to do for fun. This information is used when creating a monthly activity calendar. We also like to do crafts, card games, coloring, etc. Our goal is for everyone to participate in our activities and have a great time.
At BeeHive Homes of Gainesville, we celebrate each of our residents' birthday and we also plan several special events throughout the year. One of our favorites is honoring our Veteran residents with a BBQ on Memorial Day.
The newest addition to BeeHive Homes of Gainesville's activities department is a robotic cat! He walks the halls giving love and attention to the residents.
Our residents are really enjoying this little kitty and no one has to clean up after it.
